Dial-up Networking (Windows 95 Only)
============================================
Dial-Up Networking is the software your computer uses to
dial your modem and make a connection to the Internet.
If you do not have Dial-Up Networking installed on your computer,
Netcomplete will install it for you automatically. To verify
whether you have Dial-Up Networking installed, do the following:
Go to the Start menu on the taskbar and select
Programs | Accessories. Dial-Up Networking is listed
under Accessories if it is installed.
IMPORTANT: If you do not have Dial-Up Networking installed,
the Netcomplete setup application will prompt for your
Windows 95 CD or floppy disk so that it can install
Dial-Up Networking.
To install Netcomplete for Windows:
1. Start Windows and insert the disk or CD into the
appropriate drive.

or d:\win95\setup for a CD-ROM.

you insert the CD. Depending on the speed of your CPU,
it may take a few minutes for the welcome screen to appear.

If you inserted the Netcomplete CD before you started
Windows 95, you must manually launch the Netcomplete
installation program.

The Run dialog box appears.
In the Open text box, type: d:\win95\setup.exe
where d is your CD-ROM drive letter.
Click OK or press Enter. The first screen of the
Netcomplete installation program appears.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Netcomplete 4.0.
If you do not have Dial-Up Networking installed, you will need
your Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM.
3. When the installation is complete, you will be asked if you want
to use an existing account or set up a new NETCOM account.
WARNING: If you already HAVE a Netcomplete account,
select the option "Use an Existing Account".
Do not set up a new account.
If you NOT have a Netcom account, select the option
Set Up a New Account.
New Account Notes:
To set up a new account, you need a major credit card to complete
the registration and to open your Netcom account. If this account
is being provided to you by your company, you may not be asked
to enter credit card information.
If you set up a new account, you will be asked to enter the
registration number and serial number printed on the back of
the packaging. If you are installing from floppies, the
registration and serial numbers may be on the address label.
4. After the installation is complete, the Netcomplete installer
may need to restart your computer.
Windows 95 NOTE:
In Netcomplete 4.0 for Windows 95 the web browser installation
starts when the Netcomplete installation finishes.
After the Netcomplete software is installed, a dialog box
appears asking if you want to install your web browser--
either Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator,
depending on which CD-ROM disc you inserted.
Click OK to run the web browser installation program.
After the web browser is installed, you are prompted to
restart your computer.
5. When you finish installing Netcomplete, start Netcomplete and
log in.
To start Netcomplete, double-click on the Netcomplete icon
that you just installed.
Either the Netscape Communicator or the Internet Explorer
web browser will start automatically.
C. Application Notes
============================================
To report problems with the software or request enhancements,
send email to:
U.S.: bugs@ix.netcom.com
Canada: support@netcom.ca
***Do not install Netcomplete or the version of
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 included on this CD
on a Windows NT workstation.
1. Installation Error
A "Divide by zero or overflow error" may occur if you press
<ALT><TAB> while Netcomplete is installing either the
Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer application.
If this occurs, restart Windows and run the installation
program again. Do not press <ALT><TAB> during installation.
2. Netcomplete Mail Caveats
A. E-mail Attachments
You may not be able to open certain file attachments from
within the Netcomplete Mail application.
If you cannot open an attachment, do the following steps:
1. Save the attachment to your hard disk.
2. Start the application, and then open the file.
B. E-mail Tab Labels
If you installed Netscape Communicator, Netcomplete Mail
may display the size, date, sender, and subject fields
of email improperly--it shows the size of the message in
every field.
A patch has been made available by Microsoft to upgrade
Windows 95 and correct the problem. For more information,
go to:
www.netcom.com/bin/webtech/NETCOM_Accounts/Clients/Email/comctl.html
You can also install the patch from the CD-ROM with Netcomplete
and Netscape. When you first insert the CD, click on the following link
in the Autorun installation program:
"Run Microsoft ComCtl32 Update"
B. HTML Mail
Netcomplete Mail does not support HTML formatted text.
If someone sends you an e-mail message using HTML
formatted text, the e-mail message will either:
--contain HTML formatting tags
--appear twice--with a copy of the message containing
HTML formatted tags
To avoid having HTML tags show up in the body of e-mail messages
that you receive, ask people to send you e-mail using standard
ASCII formatted text.
C. Mail Notification with Additional Mailboxes
Only the primary account e-mail address can be notified
about new mail. This affects users whom you have given
an additional mailbox (e-mail address) to in the following
two ways:
--Users with additional secondary mailboxes will NOT
be notified about new mail automatically when they
log in to Netcom.
Users with additional mailboxes will have to open
Netcomplete Mail and select Get New Messages
to see if they have any mail.
--Users with additional secondary mailboxes will see
notifications if the primary account e-mail address
has new mail.
Because mailboxes are password protected, the additional users
will not be able to download the Netcom account holders mail.
For more information about additional mailboxes, go to:
www.netcom.com/bin/mbox/
3. Java Ticker Applications
If you use a Java-based ticker application that does not check
your Windows 95 registry to find your default web browser, the
ticker application can bring up the Netcomplete web browser
that is used when you sign up as a Netcom customer, instead of
Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
The ticker application can bring up the Netcomplete web browser
when Netcomplete is running and your default web browser is NOT
running.
If the Netcomplete web browser appears when you click on
the ticker application, close it. Start your default web browser,
and click on the ticker application again.
4. Changing Web browsers
If you install a version of Netcomplete with a different
web browser than the one you had previously (either
Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator), your previous browser
application will NOT show up in the Netcomplete toolbar.
To have both browsers show up in the Netcomplete toolbar,
you must manually add the previous web browser. To do so,
refer to the Toolbar entry in the online help index.
5. PeopleLink Registration
PeopleLink is a FREE instant messaging service.
To use the PeopleLink service, you need the following 3 things:
--a connection to the Internet, which you get as a Netcom customer
--an e-mail address, which you get as a Netcom customer
--PeopleLink software, included on this CD
But to use the PeopleLink FREE instant messaging service,
you must register with PeopleLink.
To register with PeopleLink, do the following:
A> Install the PeopleLink software.
B> Start the PeopleLink software
C> In the PeopleLink Sign In dialog box, enter your
e-mail address in the E-mail field.
Do not enter anything in the password filed.
It should say <I don't have a password>
D> Click the Sign in button.
E> In the Register dialog box that appears, click the
Register button.
F> Your web browser is launched and takes you to the
PeopleLink Registration page.
Follow the instructions to sign up for PeopleLink.
TIP: Use your Netcom services password as your
PeopleLink password. Your services password is the
password you use to access e-mail.
6. Upgrading from NetCruiser
When you upgrade from NetCruiser to Netcomplete 4.0, you cannot
overwrite two .dll files.
Two error messages appear asking to overwrite a .dll file.
You must:

The installation will then be completed successfully.
